Report on the clairs of the shell Gatherers at Ping Crau.
I have examined eight of the petitioners who have come for-
ward to state the dose of the shell getherers at Ping Chau and as it is
not nca intended to bring forward any more of the Petitioners for exami-
· novion, I now make my Recort upon the case 22 it stands.

The Petitioner along Sing, master of the Junk "Son tak Sing"
Ben Ohio, mester of the Junk "Tai Lee"; Fan Tie formerly master of the
Junk "Ohau Wing; and now e lime burner, and Chiu Puk, master of the JuLK
"Tang Ro", state that they do not now sent eny compensevion, but that
that they naut the toll obarged by the Crown Lessees of 9 canderes12
per Tau of shells collected, to be removed.

I find chet the whole case of the shell gatherers has been
worked up by ken Tim, and although the Petition was made nominally by
the shell gabbersre, it is really the petition of Yan Tin.

The existing Crown Leases of Lentao Barine Lots dos.1 3.2
were duly granted to Chen Keel Ohiu and three others on the 21st. May,
1909 for 10 years from the 17th: Apr: 1902 at Crown Rents amounting to
$1,200 per annum. The leases were granted for the sole purpose of snabi-
ang the Lessees to search for and obtain ocre, and shells from the see-
bed off Lanteo and surrounding Ping Chen Islands.

The Crown Lessees started work es the let Hing Compery
inmediately on the grant of the Leases and notified to the Junk onbere
that they would issue licenses for coral dredging within the waters com-
prised in their Lease at a charge of S cendersens for each tau collected
and carried swey to other places.
Upon this the caployees of the jus cnners who carried
stails to the Shar Shui Fo line-burners refused to dredge any longer,
stating, as the line burners refused to pay the tax, the esters of the
junks would not be able to earn snough money to pay then enough to liv3
ca.
